Catavento is a science museum located in São Paulo, Brazil. It occupies the historic Palácio das Indústrias, a landmark building that once served as the city hall.

For many young students, especially those attending public schools, a visit to Catavento represents their first meaningful contact with science and the scientific method. Although the museum offers content and infrastructure designed for younger audiences, we felt its visual communication did not fully capture their curiosity, energy, or imagination.

That gap became our starting point.

Irreverence sits at the heart of the identity.

Together, colour, typography, and illustration create a flexible visual language that makes complex subjects feel inviting. Science becomes something visitors can approach, explore, and enjoy, not something they are expected to understand before walking through the door.

The creative direction deliberately combines two contrasting worlds: the serious character traditionally associated with museums and the playful energy of teenage culture.

This tension gives Catavento a distinctive voice, knowledgeable without being rigid, educational without being dull, and playful without becoming childish.

Catavento is organized into four main areas:

We developed a dedicated colour code and a family of illustrations for each section. This system gives every area its own personality while keeping the museum’s identity consistent as a whole.

The illustrations also work as visual landmarks, helping visitors identify and navigate the different sections more intuitively. Humour runs throughout the system, transforming wayfinding into part of the museum experience rather than treating it as purely functional information.
